iFrom Our Special Correspondents.) a FEATHERSTON. Tho monthly meeting of tho Featherston County Council was held on Friday. Tho county fund account was reported in debt as .£lO6l Is. 7d. Tho overseer's reports showed that extensive damago to tho roads in various parts of tho county had resulted from the recent bad weather. OTAKI. A meeting of tho committee of tho norowhenua Association was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs. Cockrell (chairman), Howell, Allen, Nicolson, and Davison Correspondence was read from tho AVairarapa Association, stating that August 15 had been sot apart for tho Nordon Cup match with tho Horowhenua Union, and, unless tho fixture wero played on that day the matter would have to bo roferrcd to tho governing body, and could not take placo till September, if at all. as tho season would bo at a close. .. It was decided to play tho match on Thursday next, and to instruct
the selectors to arrange tho team as soon as possible. It was resolved that tho men's championship fixtures be cried off
till after tho return of the team. Owing to the bad state of the Olmu ground, it was decided that Eahiri and Shannon meet on tho Maunkau Ground. It was decided to write to tho Levin Club (men), asking for overdue affiliation fee. At the Police Court last week, heforo Messrs. A. H. Rollo and W. J. Howell, J.P.'s, John Cortlello wascnarged with disorderly conduct, tho offence having beon committed in Mill Road on July 20. Accused was also charged with assault on William M'Kegg. Cordello pleaded guilty to both offences. Constable Snthorlcy stated that tho accused had arrived from Lovin undor the influonco of
liquor, nnd had gono to fho Central | Hotel, nnd caused a disturbance. Ho had been requested lo leave, and was doing so when he assaulted M'Kogg, causing injury. Cordello pleaded drink as the cause of the trouble, stating that ho had scarcely touched it for two years. The Bench held that this was no excuse, but as accused had been in the hospital, they would take a lenient vTcw of tho matter. On the first charge ho was convicted and finod 55., costs 175., and on the second 10s. (no costs), in default 43 hours' imprisonment. FEATHERSTON. A deputation from the Martinboroughi Kailway League will proceed to Wellington on Tuesday to interview th» Piime Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massoy) regarding the need for railway communication between Marlinborough and the main line. It will bo pointed out that the cost of cartage on produce and goods from Alartinbofough to Featherston, and vice versa, largely increases the prices. The cost of cartage on chaff from Martinborough to Featherston is about twelve shillings • per ton, whereas railage for the same distance would bo about 2s. per ton. It is held that N a railway from Featherston to Martinborough would i.ot betexponsive to construct, as the country between the two places is fairly level. A medal competition for ladies of tho Featherston Golf Club was concluded on Thursday. Result: Mrs. A. E. AVickons, 1 (GJ points); Miss Tyer, 2 (41 points); Mrs.' W. Toogood, S (4 points). CARTERTON. The ground committee of tho Wakarapa 'P. and A. Society held a meeting and on inspection of the showground appointments on Friday. Numerous improvements were suggested, and in the majority ot instances the work was authorised to be immediately proceeded with. A working bee of members of the committee* will complete some of the work on Wednesdav next. Mr. E. Stout, headmaster of tho Belvedere School, will resume duty on Monday, having been on siok leave during the past month. Mr. K. Billington, who has had charge of the Hukanui creamery for a number of years, ha 3 resigned his position to take up duty as second assistant ■ at the Dalefield Dairy Factory. '
