[Bt GtEXCOE.] Mira has gone lame in the shoulder, and is an unlikely starter in rho Winter Cup. When tie news became known in Christchurch three telegrams were dispatched to tho aiiaQ train ironl Napier asking W.Ryan, to ride other horses in the race. Among those he was offered the mount on wero Odessa'.and La Roina, but up to the time of the Mokoia sailing on Saturday night he bad not decided which rido he would accept.
Though now on tho eve of the Grand National meeting, the position has not become very much clearer during tho past oouple of days. As the result of a poor display on Saturday, Continuance has weakened in the market, while Paritutu and Captain Jingle have firmed. . The chief items af interest in connection with tho Hurdles has been the solid support accorded Tho Native. 'On Saturday morning he performed pleasingly with Koran over five fences. Prior U leaving Wellington on Friday his owner informed tho writer that he had had the most glowing accounts from his trainer of the good work which the black gelding had been doing. He was very confident of the result of the 1 two miles. He points out that last year, when suffering from influenza, The Natitto finished close up, third, to Continuance and .The Rover, and this trio - nad. the race to themselves over tho last half-mile. This is correct, but it only draws further attention to the prospects of The Rover, who got a very had run in last year's event, and has now only 21b. more to carry. So far nothing has galloped so well on the flat as the Winter Cup candidates, Mount Victoria and Saluto. The former, carrying S. Read and a big saddle (or about a stono more than his Cup weight), ran the fastest half-mile on Saturday morning, and did it well. His condition is-reported to bo as nearly correct as possible, and it looks as if the locally-owned bracket, Odessa and Mount Victoria, will be the machine favourite for the mile. An extraordinary feature of the Australian Steeplechase is the fact that many horses have been placed in tho event ou more than ono occasion. Concave, who acted as runner-up to Scrutineer on Saturday; won the race last year. Mr. W. R. Tuck, owner of Antarctic, left for Christchurch on Saturday night, to see his horse compete at the Grand National meeting, which opens at Riccarton to-morrow. Racing week at Christchurch opens to-' day with tho trotting meeting at Aldington., ' 1 • Scrutineer's time for the Australian Steeplechase has only once been beaten since the race was run over tho present distance. The half-sister by Lupin to St. Toney, who was a member of B. Nicholl's team until she went a bit wrong last autumn, is now trained by R. Brough at Hawera (says the Hawera"Star"). ~ J. Fryor has* got Bismark'protty -well right again from his recent soreness, and intends to try, him in a hack steeplechase or two in the-Bpring. Two of the progeny of Ran Rau.(dam of Golden Eagle, Coronetted, Nicotine, and others) are amongst the horses in work at Hawera. J. Fryer's stable shelters a three-year-old gelding by Sylvia Park—Rau Rau, while R. Brough has a full-brother to Coronetted under his caro. FIXTURES.
