Cnptain J. B. Rainey, marine superintendent for the Tyscr Line, arrives in Wellington by to-uighfs Napier mail train and proceeds to Christchurch by tho Maori on a business trip.
Mr. F. B. Allen, formerly Director of tho School of Mines at the Thames, and now Director of Technical Education in Western Australia, has been given a farewell dinner in Perth, on tho cvo of his ddeparture tor England,' by members of (he staffs of Technical Schools in the Perth metropolitan area. The Bishop of Perth presided. Mr. P. 8.. Allen, who is a brother of Mr. B. B. Allen, chief clerk of the Government Printing Office, is a graduate of the Olago University. He resigned his appointment at tho Thames to become Director of tho School of Mines at Kalgoorlie, which position he resigned to take up the control of technical education in Perth. The Wangnnui Borough Council has narrowed down the applications for tho position of borough engineer to Messr». Fox and Slnveloy, of Christchurch, and Mr. Hursthouse, of Napier. Miss Margaret Cooper, the clever entertainer, and the members of her company, who have been staying in Wellington for a" lew days, leave for Danncvirko this morning, and will visit Hastings, Napier, Palnierstoii North, and Marlon during tho present week.
