Miss Barnes, who is travelling New Zealand in connection with the Y.W.CA.,' lunched at Government House on Thursday. A Press Association nwssnjre from Sydney states that Archbishop Redwood has arrived there from the Islands. The Rev. A. M. Johnson, vicar of St. Paul's, Thorndon, whose health has not been very good lately, will leave this morning on a short visit to tho Wairarapa. The preacher at St. Paul's proGuthedrnl to-morrow, morning , and evening, will bo the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott).' Mr. J. A. Young, member for Waikato, has been appointed chairman of tho Native Affairs Committee. The death oocurred yesterday morning at his residence, Tinakori Road, of Mr. Alexander James M "lavish, formerly of tho firm of M'Tavieh, Tatum and Co., land and estate agents, and a well .known resident. The deceased, who was 70 years of age, was born in Inverness, Scotland, and was educated there and at the famous Bluecoat School, London, and subsequently at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He arrived in Wellington in 1861, and entered the service of Mr. F. A. Krull, a leading chant and for many years Consul for Germany. Ho soon showed himself to be a gifted man of business, and'it was not long before he was admitted as a partner. In. 1884 Mr. M'Tavieh was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce, and was chairman of the New Zealand directorate of tho Imperial Fire Insurance Company. When Mr. Krull took up his residence in Wanganui Mr. M'Tavish joined in partnership with Major C. T. Tatum,. and carried on business in this city for many years. He had been in indifferent health for some time past, but his condition did not become serious until Monday last. Ho leaves a widow («i daughter of the late Judge Halse) aiid a family of two sons and one {laughter. . One- of the sons is at present in \: couver, the other being in New Zealand. The daughter is the'wife of Mr. H. P. Richmond, solicitor, of Auckland. Ah exchange of pulpits hns been arranged between the Rev. J. Gibson Smith, of St. Andrew's, Wellington, and the Rev. Thomas Tait, M.A., 8.D., of St. Paul's, Christchurch, tho occasidn being tho anniversary service at St. Andrew's to-morrow, where the Rev. Thomas 'fait will preach morning and evening. Mr. John Lemmonc announces that Madame Molba is to tour with Eugene Yyaye-, the famous violinist, and Herr Wilhelm Backhaus, the distinguished German pianist, on her return to England next morath. This is ono of the most remarkable concert organisations- over known, as nil three are at tho topmost pinnacle of their profession. Mr. W. H. Didsbury, honorary dentist to the Wellington Hospital, left for the south last, evening. Ho will bo absent from Wellington for a week. Mr. M'Gregor Wright, Mayor of Woolston (Christchurch) and formerly art dealer of Wellington, has received advice that Mr. AndeTson, the talented portrait painteT, who visited New Zealand about twelve years ago, contemplates another touT of the Dominion, Mr. Anderson, ■who wrote from Basle (Switzerland) stated that he hod been having an interesting time recently with a party of Egyptologists on the upper reaches of the Isile.
