■WORKMEN'S COMPENSATION. •Jn the last mail tot hand from London references are made to the unprofitable results to the British companies of insurance agonist workmen's compensation. Startliug additions, it is stated, are being made to premiums for this class of business, and there is a chance that unnecessarily high rates may he demanded. At present the companies concerned ore in a. chaetened frame of mind, having learnt a lesson from past experiences. The highclass non-tariff offices are charging almost the tariff price, the saving, in fact, being hardly enough to attract insurers apart from the personal influence of their representatives. At the same time the public have been so alarmed by the failure of weak offices aud by the disastrous reports of some which have kept afloat, that.the offer of a notably cheap rate is regarded with considerable suspicion, and is often not accepted. It is pointed out that a moderate rise of premium ail round would cause no great disturbance in the relative position of the offices, but an unduly large increase would have a very different, effect. For example, if it is found that a 30s. premium should be 42<3. to cover the risk and leave a profit, the new rate would probably be paid with only a reasonable amount of grumbling, but if it be made 60s. there is room for the non-tariff offices to come in and make a profit. Attempts to exploit the public in the past have nlways led to an orgy of competition in the insurance arena, and such would occurr again if circumstances warrant. Evidently tho adjustment of premiums for coyer against workmen's claims for compensation has yet to be made in London insurance circles. ' ARGENTINE SHIPMENTS.
