At a meeting of tho Poverty Bay General Labourers' Union, tho following resolution was passed :—"That this union vigorously protests against tho Government's, proposal to construct public works by the contract system, and that strong representations be made with a view to maintaining the present systems of co-operative and day labour." It was further decided to forward copies of this resolution to the Ministers for Labour and Public Works, and also to all labour unions in tho Dominion, with a view to the formation of o strong public opinion on this matter.

THE REVOLVER MAN. Invcrcargill, August 8. A young man. named Herbert Shields was charged at the Police Court with breaking and entering and stealing three revolvers and cartridges, also with stealing a hand-bag, containing £2 10s., from a, woman in the street. When arrested he presented a revolver at the constable, but the weapon was not loaded. The police stated that accused had arranged with another to stick, up people on Saturday night.
