HOTEL EMPLOYEES.

At tho Hotel Employees' Conference a deputation was appointed to ask tho Minister for Labour to provide an amendment to the Shops and Offices Act giving a clearer definition of restaurants, so a~ to include clubs end private hotels, in competition with licensed houses and boardiughouses that were commercial establishments and employing three or more workers. Oilier things' asked are compulsory Sunday holiday for bar assistants and a half-holiday on one day of (ho working weel; from 12 noon; restaurant assistants, a half-holiday in bv/inessos open for six days, and a full holiday iu businesses open for seven days. It wa-i suggested that tiiue-sheets be provided, and that trade union secretaries should have, power to lay informations under tho Act. In connection with the failure of the Arbitration Court lo make awards for private hotels, it was recommended that the Government lie asked lo amend the Act, making it mandatory that awards bo madorn such cases. It was resolved (hat consideration of the question of joining tho United Labour party as a federation be held over, and in the meantime the unions and branch unions be recommended to join tho party. Affiliated unions wore instructed to seek for equal pnv for equal work for male and women workers in future awards.
