AT THE COUNCIL, ANOTHER SPECIAL MEETING), Several tramway matters vrero dealt with by the Wellington City Council at its meeting last night. Newtown Fares. Tho following recommendation of the Tramway Committee was adopted :—"That the petitioners for tho removal of the terminus of the penny section from Newtown from its present position at Veilcli and Allen's corner to tho intersection of Kent Terrace and Vivian Street, or to tlio intersection of Tory and Vivian Streets, should bo informed that the oouncil cannot accede to their request." Charitable Workers' Concessions. The committee reported that they had given further consideration to tho question of tlio issue of tram passes to charitable institutions, and recommended that tho present holders of such passes should bo informed that tho department l will withdraw the passes on September 30 next but that application for renewal would be considered, at a charge of 255. per quarter, if made to the council. Tho committee also recommended that siicb passes should bo available only when tho officers arc carrying out duties connected with their respective institutions. Councillor Cameron moved that this clause should be referred back to tho committee. He thought that there were nurses and others travelling about doing good work who should not );o affected as the clause would affect them. Councillor M'Kenzio seconded tho motion. Ho said that the clause was badly drafted, and that ho thought that it was not intended to take away tho passes from such workers in charily. Councillor Fuller said that the position was that if tho council wished to givo these passes they should pay tho tramway department for them. That was tho intention of the clans*. Tho debit should bo against district fund, not against tho tramway account. Councillor M'Kenzio said that the clauso was not explicitly worded. Councillor Fitzgerald: Tho committee cannot give •understanding. Tho motion was defeated and the clauso passed. , Aro Street Cars.

The committer also reported: "That in consequence of the alterations provided jn the new time-table, whereby tlio Aro Street ciii' 3 generally run to tho General Post Office, and only workers' cars connect with the railway station, .some alteration is required in the present sections on this line. The committee recommend that the total distance between the Aro Street terminus and the railway station he divided into two sections at Manners Street, and that an overlapping section 1m fixed between the corner of Aro Street and Willis Street and the Post Office." The committco havo no recommendation to make." Councillor Cameron suggested that fares "down" from Wadestown should lie cheaper than fai'es "up." Ho had noticed that many peoplo walked down, but rode lip. Councillor Fletcher observed that Councillor Hindmarsh (who was absent from the council at Parliament) had givon notice to move that tho report of tho Trap way Committee should be, rescinded. CVoiiueillot' Fletcher wislmd to" know if the Mayor intended to prevent the officers from carrying out tho decisions of tho council, pending tho decision of Councillor Hindmarsh's motion.

Tho Mayor replied ' that he hod considered whether the matter should be practically hung up for throe weeks. Ho thought that the best course would bo to hold a special meeting.
