PALMERSTON HOSPITAL.

*—. AFFAIRS BATHER INTERESTING. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Palmerston N., August 8. At tho Palmerston North Hospital Board meeting to-day it was revealed that two nurses have recently .been down, with typhoid _ fever, and one with serious gastric • trouble. All are recovering, but will require three months' leave. Sister F. W. Murray resigned with a view to taking a trip abroad. The institution was therefore short-handed. It was decided to engage a second Maori probationer—one at present qualifying having proved very satisfactory. There has been.some discussion on the question of architecture. Dr. Valentino recommended to tho board that it should employ one of certain firms of proved capacity as specialists in work of this tvpe to design the Old' People's Home to bo erected at a cost of .£SOOO. The letter stated that, when architects who did not spccialiso in such work wore employed, dissatisfaction frequently resulted. The board s own local nrchitect applied to do the work, and there was a request from the New Zealand Institute of Architects that all such designs should bo thrown open to competition. It was resolved to follow this course, offering prizes of JMO and .£2O to members of the Institute of Architects.

Another incident at to-day's board meeting dealt with the purchase of a horse, and trap for tho matron and nurses. Tho Auditor-General had tagged the' item in tho balance-sheet, and asked for reasons whv tho members of the board should not bo proceeded against for the recovery of tho amount. Various reasons were given, these including the advisability of letting the nurses have fresh air, tho uso of the trap for shopping for tho hospital, for carting ice, for bringing tho secretary, and his books into town, etc., and it was decided to await the AuditorGeneral's reply to this. It. transpires that the treasurer (Mr. Walter Rutherford) who had formerly resigned the secretaryship on account of pressure of other business, had resigned tho treasurership rather than sign the cheque because ho said that tho Auditor-General would not pass it. A child can do it. What? Make a cup of delicious "Camp Coffee" iu u trice.—Advt.*
