- : • IN OPEN EVENING. L • The first open evening of the Wellingt lon Shakespeare.Club was held last evening, aiid was greatly enjoyed by- th'oso 3 present, the audience quite .filling, the - room. Scenes from Shakespeare, diai logues, recitations, songs, and a reading 3 formed the programme arranged for the ; evening's entertainment. A pianoforte 1 solo (a) Scherzo, "Midsummer Night's r Dream" (Mendelssohn—Liszt), and (b) r Torch Dance, "King Henry VIII" (E. b German), played by Miss Valerie Corliss, was the opening number, after which fol- - lowed a "Soliloquy on Sleep, King Henry J IV," by Mr.'W. If. Hack; Miss Hnrdiiißc--3 Maltby, as Julia, and Miss S. Putnam, as l Lucctta, played the letter scene from "Two Gentlemen of-Veroiin," their inter-- - ])retation being one of the most enjoyable - feature.-' of the evening. A song w;is con-, - tributed by jfr. Ca.rr; Miss V. St. John - recited a. "Soliloquy on Ceremony" from t "King Henry V." Mr. Shorne.v (Orlando) 3 and Mrs. Howling (liosalind) were both > good in dialogue from "As You Like It." R Mr. Leo Buckeridge, who was in food s voire, sling "Sigh No More, Ladies" f ("Mucli Ado- Abcut; Nothing").. Mr. and t Mrs. E. S. Baldwin gave a scene from >' "Macbeth" Ctlie murder of jDiuican). Miss s Speed contributed a pianoforte solo, "I!us--1 tic Dance" (Cowan). Jli.ss_ HardingeMaltby's recitation. from "King Henry i V" (the Condemnation of the Kcbol Lords) I- was exceedingly gocd, and slio had ? to bow her acknowledgments in response ; to the applause. .Very charming was the ' sccno from "Twelfth Night"—tho Revels • —taken part in by Mr. AV. K. Bock as t Sir Toby, Mr. W. G. Wickham as MalB volio. Mr. E. S. Baldwin as Sir Andrew, J Mr. TV. Godfrey as Festo. and Miss E. ' I'urdom (an Auckland lady) as Maria. - Miss Purdom was particularly delightful. B Miss Flux recited "Queen Katherine's ■ Defence," from "King Henry VIII." Miss " Ball sn.ng very expressively "Jt Was a ■ Lover and His Lass" (Reginald do Koven). Mr. Tanner was amusing in his recitation, I "Gratianc's Philosophy," from "The Mer- ' chant of Venice." Miss M. Sievwright ' recited the sleen-walking' scene from f "Macbeth." Jlr. H. E. Nicholls was par- > ticularly fine in tho reading from "Tho 3 Midsummer Night's Dream," his item bein? one of the best on the programme. : Sir Jolm Findlay, who was tho original ! president of the club, was called upon for ' a speech, which he gave—briefly and iu--1 tercstingl)'.
