Mr. Leo. livers, of Auckland, leaves Wellington to-day 011 all extended visit to England. According to his present plans he will probably remain in England at . least three years, during which time 110 hopes to make a careful study of tho existing labour unrest and other social problems, and to gather information which may bo of sonio use on his return to Now Zealand.
n « death occurred at his residence No. t°i-V Street, yesterday, of Mr. Heinrieh Carl Nees, an old resident of H ellmgton, and formerly well known as an iron merchant and saw founder. Some ten years ago 110 crected extensive brick premises on tho corner of Ghuzneo and Marion Streets, which to the present day aro known as "Nee.s's Corncx." The deceased, who was 88 ycaTs of age, sustained a paralytic stroke a week ago, from which ho never recovered.
Referring in his annual address to tho Dominion Farmers' Conference to the death of Mr. Richard Allen, of Southland, Mr. J. G. Wilson said the death of Mr. Allen was a loss not only to tho union, but to the community. The deceased, he said, was a single-minded, upright man, who did his duty iu cverythin" ho laid his hand to. Ho was respected by all and loved by many and would live green in tho memory of them all.
Mr. J. H. Howell, for tho last five years instructor in woodwork under the Wellington Education Board, has . been appointed to tho rank of. senior instructor.
A pleasant function took place in tho Public Works Office, Auckland, on Saturday, 011 the occasion of tho departure lor Wellington of two officers, Messrs. J. D. Stack and I, D. Shearer, both being on transfer—tho former to the head office ?, , I 1 Department and tho latter to tho Public Trust Office. Mr. Wither, tho resilient road engineer, on behalf of tlio staff, presented a travelling hag to Mr. Stack and a cigarette case to Mr. Shearer. Both suitably acknowledged tho gifts.
Iho officials of _ the Auckland City Council met on Friday evening to make a presentation to Mr. Alfred Wrigg, assistant engineer to the council, who is retiring after 29 years' service. Mr. John Court (Deputy-Mayor) presided, and presented Mr. Wrigg with a,purse of sovereigns 011 behalf of the officials and staff of the council, at the same time referring to Mr. Wrigjj's faithful services. Mr. Wrigg feelingly responded. Musical items were given, and at the co.nc|lusion of the gathering, the city engineer (Mr. AV. E. Bush) announced that future social'gatherings of tho staff would be held at intervals.
Mrs. Richard Arnst, wife of the exchampion sculler, is at present on a Europe tour. Last month she was in Switzerland, .and her intentions were to go on to other parts, including Stockholm.
Mr. F. C. J. Bellringer, chairman of tho New Plymouth Hospital Board, is a visitor to Wellington.
Mr. H. N, Fletcher, tlio populaT tenor, has been presented with a silver-mounted tobacco pouch by tho members of tho Wellington City Band in recognition of tho services ho lias rendered tho, band at its concerts.
The Auckland "Star's" Waihi correspondent stated on Monday that Archdeacan Brodie had a relapse and that his condition was gravo. ,
On behalf of the staff of the local offico of the Crown Lands and Survey Department, -Mr. G. E. N. Wright, chief clerk, and secretary to the Wellington Land Board was presented by the Commissioner Mr. T. N. Brodrick with a handsome roll-top desk.as a mark of.their esteem and respect. Mr. Brodrick, Mr. J. Strauchon (Under-Secretary for Lands), Mr. Smith (ohief draughtsman), and Mr. Gore (on behalf of the clerical stall) spoke ill testimony of Mr. Wright's ability and conscientiousness in the performance of his duties and of his kindly character. In responding Mr. Wright referred to his long term of service as chief clerk and secretary. He wished lie could have remained longer in the servico for the sake of his fellow officers, but was retiring voluntarily as ho did not see how he could do them or himself any good by remaining. For Mr. Bannister, his successor, ho bespoke tlio same kindly treatment as had been given to himself.
Mr. D. Ryan, Auckland manager for tho Huddart, Parker Company, is a visitor to Wellington. He leaves on a month's holiday trip to Sydney and Melbourne by the Ulimaroa on Friday.
Messrs. F. N. Abercrombio and Mr. J. Hill, who aro leaving Wellington for Auckland to-day, wcro the recipients of presentations Inst evening from tho Wellington Football Club, of which they havo been members for sevreal years.
Miss J. Mackay, who has been transferred from her position as postmistress at the Government Buildings to New Ply. month, was the recipient of a token of esteem and goodwill from tho officers of tho Government Building yesterday, when Mr. A. B. Kennedy, of the Deportment of Internal Affairs, on behalf of tho officers, presented her with a handsomo pearl pendant and gpld head chain. '
