THE HIGH COMMISSIONERSHIP.
have read the letter in vesterday's DojiwioN, signed "Woman protesting against even the mention of the present Leader of the Opposition as a likely candidate for the High- Conimis-" 6ionership of New Zealand. O.no wonders how it is that the name of .the Hon. T. , Mackenzie has been brought forward in this connection at-all; one would have thought the very fact of his having deserted the Reform party (when it was . hopelessly pitted against overwhelming i odds) in order to attain Ministerial rank ought to be. quite enough to make his chance.of being placed in-each a position , less than nil. Why, if time-servers and deserters are to be thus rewarded, something might be done for Mr, John Payne, who, although owing his.election to the House entirely, to tho untiring energy and persuasive efforts of the present. Prime . Minister, chose (for reasons best known . to himself) to throw in his lot last February with the the.ii Government. A ■ worthier recipient than Mr. Mackenzie . for, the High Commissionership might, perhaps, bo the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph ; Ward, Bt., K.C.M.G., P. 0., LL.D., etc., etc. All these numerons addenda coming after his name would likely lend strength .and dignity to him in the 'Homeland, j whereas in this democratic country-they . are but a useless encumbrance," and a i' ■'-waste.—Lain, etc., , 1 : : ' ANOTHER WOMAN VOTER, L I Aucldand, July! 28.
