ASSAULTING A POLICEMAN-
TWO BROTHERS SENTENCED. (By TclOßraph.-Press Association.) Auckland, July 29 Warnings recently issued by Mr. Cut ten, &.M., that in future any case of as saulting a policeman in the course of hi duty would be severely dealt with, wa not taken to heart by Thomas Henr Parker, who in consequence was tlr morning sentenced to 12 months wit] hard labour. The circumstances preceding Parker' arrest arceo shortly before ten o'clock oi Saturday night at Newmarket. T. H Parker and his brother William went.int the Newmarket Hotel, and on account o previous misconduct, together with thei then unsober condition, the licensee re quested them to leave. They created disturbance and a constable was sent foi He took Wm. Parker out of the hotel while friends were prevailing upon "Tom , to go quietly away. They were given chance to get home, but "Tom" ipersistei in calling out obscene language. Thei Constable Goddard went to arrest him and he intimated that he would give til policeman a "go for it." Ho mnde som efforts to do so, , but was himself throw! to tho ground with his captor on top Here William came to tho rescue by deal ing the constable some heavy blows from the rear, and endeavouring to choke hie off his brother. Other policemen came up whereon William retired to the crowd but kept inciting his brother ia continu resistance till he was searched out nm taken in hand also. Both men pleadoi guilty this morning to charges of resist anco and assault. The record agains Thos. Parker contained three previou convictions for . assaulting policemen while his brother's record contained no thing previously of the kind. Mr. Cutten stated that T. H. Pnrkc'r' record was ono of assaulting policemen using obscene language, and other lik offences, and ho would bo sentenced to l! months' hard labour. Though Win. Par ker's conduct on this occasion was prob ably worse than his brother's, he had no previously been convicted for that kiu< of offenco, and he would be trcatec leniently by being sentenced to twi months hard labour.
