"BLOW TO THE DISTRICT."
MIRAMAR AND PROPOSED TRAM . ; FARES. The following letter has been addressed by the Mirainar Borough Council to the City Council: — "The proposed alteration of tlio tramway sections from Courtenay Place to tho City Boundary, whereby threo sections will bo created in place of tho existing two sections, so materially affects, tho Miramnr Borough tramways that this council feels that somo representation sliould be made of tho borough's position in tho matter. Tho borough fares aro so low that Hi© tramways do not directly pay expenses. This policy has been adopted with a view to encouraging settlement in the district, but is, of course, futile ii tho fares on tho city sections to the boundary arc increased. This council is of opinion that in the cvont of tho increased cliargo being made tho tramway rovenue,„wiU bo , .considerably reduced—it is estimated that at present the Miramnr residents pay A'oooo annually to the city tramways—and also feels that tho increase in faros will also reduco the rateable values of Kilbiruio and its neighbourhood.' This council, of course, realises that it lias no right to interfere in any war with tho city tramway management, but fools sure that your council will fully consider tho proposed alteration of sections beforo inflicting so serious a blow (o this district, which is now almost entirely dependent on tho tramways for its advancement."
