GREAT FOREST FIRE.
ALASKAN TOWN IN PERIL. By Telecraph—Press Association— Copyrielit Vancouver July 25. A great forest tiro swept down the mountains surrounding the town of Skagway) Alaska, and threatens to wipe it out. The whole of tho inhabitants are fighting tho ilnines. Tho mountain- in flames is a fearsome spectacle. . . Skagway is a busy little town of about 4000 inhabitants on tho east bank of Chilkoot Inlet, on the Alaskan coast. It is the terminus of the Pacific and Arctic Railway, which runs 111 miles inland over the famous White llouso Pass, of which much weslieard in the days of the Klondike rush. This railway is now practically the only route used in approaching tho Klondike and Yukon districts from tho coast. Skapway is furnished with hotels, onrlitting establishments, and other accommodations for tho miner. The country surrounding the town is picturesque and heavily wooded. The climate is comparatively dry, and, although the winter temperature is low.- at this time of tho vonr the weather is frequently dry and liot, with the thermometer standing iu the neighbourhood of SO degrees.
