CIVIC AFFAIRS.
WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of tho Wellington City Council was held last evening, tnero being present: Tho Mayor (Mr. U. M Lpen), and Councillors J. Smith, Jas. Orodber, Jas. Trevor, A. E. Atkinson, V. Cohen, Geo. Frost, W. H. P. Barber E Tregcar, J. Fuiktf, jimr., 3. D. ald, A. H. Ilindmarsh. In reply to a report from the Eoseneath and Oriental Bay Municipal Association, it was decided to inform- tho writer that fire alarms had already been authorised i'or their district, and that tho work of erecting them would bo -undertaken as soon as possible. On the recommendation of the Reserves Committee, it was agreed that tho two inner iences at the Thorndon Esplanado be removed, that two moro openings for access purposes be made, and also that the scats be repaired and repainted. Tho council resolved thnt no Jiahility could bo admitted in connection with the death of a horse owing to a recent collieiou with a tramcar, but that tho owner, ivho had applied for consideration, bo fjrnntcd n compassionate allowance of .£5 The compulsory tram stop at the foot of Marjonbanks Street, at tho City Hotol corner, was authorised to Ik abolished as recommended by tho Tramways Board of Management. The recommendation, of tho City Engineer with respect to the damage caused' to property at Sutherland Koad, Lyall Bay, by the recent heavy rains, viz.: "That nnc of the corporation men be allowed to assist for two days in removing tho debris, iias given effect to, without lireIrnliep. ' '•I'lirce ratepayers were granted loam on tho deferred payment system, in order to carry out drainage works, tho applicants bonifj without funds.
