The London wool market is weaker, and greasy medium crossbreds and scoured crossbreds have suffered most, having declined about 5 per cent. When the salea opened on July 2, fine and mediam ero?sbreds wore from 5 to 10 per.cent. liighcr than at tbc cloro of tho previous sales, and this advance appears to have been since lost. So far, we have had no' definite reasons given for the adverse tone of the market, except that American buyers are overloaded. It, is to be feared that toe weight of wool at present available to manufacturers is much in excess o{ immediate requirements, for it must be remembered that, in addition to tho accuraula- - tion of supplies of colonial wool that were catalogued at tho current sales, there is the enormous clips of Europe and North America, that Is tho wool from about 246.000,000 fhc3p for the manufacturers to lift. Temporarily then, the supplies* must be much in exces3 of. ronuircaients, but thfe position cannot hold.for any lengthened period. British trade is so exceedingly good at the niumenl that there must be a revival in this Important raw' product.
. riOHTIXG THE MEAT TUtTST. According to reports from various cities in the Eastern States, write 3 the New York correspondent of tho London "Telegraph," housewives are bunding themselves together with ■ tho . object of securing a. reduction in the price of moat. In Williamsburg, one of the suburbs of New I'ork, chiefly inhabit.itcd liy tho foreign element, open-air demonstrations have been held, and some of the butchers', fc.?,rlng violence, closed their ships. The Housewives' League protests that the prices of meat are artificially maintained by the trusts, which , have acquired a . monopoly.. Tho Beef Trust, it is urged, lias the American people by the throat.
Tho master butchers declare that they arc powerless, ami say that the-problem can be easily, solved by abolishing the tariff charges on food animals which tho South American countries are eager to export. It is understood that tlie present tariff amount* to a penny a pound, and enables tho Meal Trust in the United States to make its own terms with the producers, the retailers, and the public. The biiichcra themselves urge the removal of tlm la-rlff, and it is believed that the temper of the American people will insist on the Government enacting legislation on their behalf. Tbo price ot the best meat over here is only a trifle more than that of the best meat in England, but in view of t'no tremendous resources of the United States for raicincr meat, it is urged that the price should be cuibiilcnibly less.
The master butchers allege that the; Meat Trust limits the amount of fresh meat on the market at any one time; that it has increased the price of fresh meat, prevented competition in the purchase and transportation of cattle and freeh. meat, fixed- standard prices to the public or consumer, carried ou.t contracts not to sell meat bebw a fixed price, and, finally, that the prices are extortionate.
In Willininsburg the housewives paraded the streets and attacked the buyers of meat. They Migge3l that all people should protest by giving , up meat, during the eunimer, and living on vegetables, l'eople who tried that experiment last year say that tliny not, wily iinoivi'cd tlidi finances, hut their health as well. Vegetablen in tho Eastern States are not dirt cheap, the cost of a lettuce, for example, ranging from sd. to Is. People devoted to beans, which aro very fashionable in the dietary of Boston, the centre of American culture, can live cheaply cnotish, because beans in tho big American cities arc cheap, and arc now selling In enormous quantities. The favourite dish ol the American workman to-day is pork and beans.
