The rivers are in a flooded condition, and streams have' overflowed in various directions. The flood is not as severs as that of last week* however, as the rain-has been coming from a southerly quarter. The monthly meeting of the Charitablo Aid Committee was held yesterday, when the treasurer' 6 statement showed a credit balance of ,£157 14s. M. The list of recipients of charitablo aid was considered, and the secretary instructed as to what action was to bo taken in individual cases. The Masterton Debating Society held its weekly session , last evening, when an interesting debate took place on the subject, "That the present land ballot system be abolished. \ | The Masterton Chamber of Commerce has convened a meeting for July 31 of all persons interested in the opening of the Bast Coast lands by railway. Delegates are expected to be present from Ilawke's : Bay, Pongaroa, tho -Forty-mile Bush, and the Lower Valley. During tho quarter ending June 30 G1 patients were admitted to the Masterton Hospital, and 58 discharged. Sister M'Cosh Smith, of the staff of the Masterton Hospital, has received nn appointment on tho staff of tho Timaru Hospital.

Settlers in, the Wairarapa state that bo far dairy herds have wintered very well, and look better.. generally than thoy did at the same time last year. The Finance Committee of the Wnirarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board decided .yesterday to recommend tho proposal of the Wallace and Fiord Board concerning tho compulsory detention of morally defective gins and women to the favourable consideration of the board.
