AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
CROSS-C'OUNTKY CHAMPIONSHIP. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, July 21. The ■Wellington Provincial Cross-country Championship was held to-day, and, although the weather was not good, the event proved n groat success. The raco started from the show • ground, and .the paper led across paddocks at tlie back, across the Mangaono Uiyor, and back to the. grounds, via ".Kangitikei. and Cuba ■Streets. The placed men were-.—J. Bradburv, F..' Byrne, W. Press, L. Cooke, I'. J. Biirrell,'and B. Bennett, in that order. Bradbury ran a great racc, as also did Byrne, and both men deserve praise. Masterton won the Whyte and Mackay Shield 'and, as they are only a new' club, it is 'a very great, honour for them. Lowe,' of Feilding, won the Sealed Handicap, with Pryor IMasterton) only 7sec. behind for second. The Manawutu Club deservo praise for the way in which they conducted the race, and Mr. Park (as secretary) filled, his position -in a most capable mariner. At a meeting of deleKates to-day it was decided to hold a country championship meeting, and that Feilding should have the first refusal.
