AUSTRALIA V. HAMPSHIRE. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright London, July 22. The 'Australian Eleven began a match against Hampshire at Portsmouth today. Batting first, (he county sewed ; •171, njid at slumps the Australians had lost three wickets for HI runs. Macartney, M.'l.aren, llazlitt, and Webster were omitted from the colonial Hide. Sprott won tho toss and batted. The weather wo* dull, the wicket fast. Minneil: and Emery bowled. Tho county made a good showing. Jiowell, when 15, was dismissed leg before by a full-loss from Emery, nnd with the .score at 10, Stone was taken at short-slop by Carkeek olf Mijinett. From then forward Hampshire scored steadily. Fifty was posted after thirty minutes' play, and the century in fiftyfive minutes. Fry was in thirty-three minutes for 24. Barrett was the fourth batsman out. Then Mead, who was in first wicket down, nnd Jcphson became associated, and added 95 runs. Jephson seared his 55 in an hour's time by splendid all-round and faultless play. His score included eleven 4's. Mead, who also (showed brilliant ploy all round the wicket, and splendid cutting and driving, reached 100 after 140 minutes' play. Ho continued steadily throughout his innings. Mead and Newman added 45 for the seventh wiclret, and -Sprot nnd .Mead added 34 for tho eighth wicket. Sprot batted ten minutes and hit a sixer and four fours. Tho ninth wicket saw 47 added. Remnant was at tho wickets for 25 minutes. Mead was unbeaten. Ilis 240 minutes at the wickets were faultless and clean. He 'mado 25 fours. Tho second century was made in 130 minutes and the whole innings occupied 2CO minutes.' Tho Australian fielding was excellent. Mayne and Jennings opened for Australia, Brown and Remnant bowling. The batsmen started badly. Mayno was taken sharply at second slip after ho had been batting twenty minutes. Jennings sent a skier to cover. Ills innings lasted thirty minutes, and his scoring strokes were mainly on the on-side. Smith was yorkeil. Bardslcy and Kelleway were unseparatod.
