A BOY IN A SAFE.
AND HOW THEY GOT HIM OUT. (Dy Telegraph.—FrcsS Association.) Auckland, July 23. Tho that a boy was shut up inside a • ie in His Majesty's Arcado tonight soon drew a crowd to the vicinity, and caused somo excitement, mid not a little alarm. Somo boys were skylarking round a safe, which had Ijeen loft by a tenant of tho buildings in the passugeway preparatory to being installed in his office. One of tho lads got into tho safe, whereupon somo of his companions slammed tho door upon him. To their consternation they wero unable to open it again. The handlo of tho door was broken, and they had no means of releasing their imprisoned companion. An appeal was made to a bystander, and a constable was l'elchcd. Efforts wero mado with the aid of a screw-driver, a chisel, and a hammer to prise the door open. These amateur attomps at safe-breaking wero watched by an over-incrcnsing crowd for three-quarters of an hour, and ns the minutes pawed many anxious expressions wore heard as to tho safety of the capfive boy. Eventually, after n locksmith had been sought and burglar's tools desired ill vain, tho caretaker of tho theatre arrived on the scene, and with the aid of a cold chisel managed to turn the handlo of the safe door, and pulling it open, released the juvenile prisoner. Tho latter was covered with perspiration, mid ill an evident state of partial collapse. His reappearance was hailed with delijfht by his companions, who boro him off in triumph after what had been a most unenviable experience.
