A meeting of the Wellington Referees' Association was held last night, Mr. D. M'Kenzie presiding. A manlier of the Association brought up the subject of Mr. V. Martin's refusal to olliciate in the Victoria CollegeAthletic third-class match at Miramar on June 20. It appears that Mr. Martin is a senior referee, but this season he has not been appointed to a single senior match. As the Appointment Board declined to give Mr. Martin any reason for not appointing him to senior matches, ho refused to take his match on June 29 and wrote to the liugby Union stating that his action was in the nature of a protest against what lie. termed the "star chamber methods" of the Appoint-, ment Board. The Rugby Union forwarded the letter to tho Appointment Board, who, it is stated, intend to take no action in tho matter. AVhen the subject was being discussed at the referees' meeting last night, one member expressed tho opinion that Mr. Martin had adopted ail* improper attitude, but others considered that ho was to bo sympathised with. Tho chairman said that Mr. Martin had a right to expect a senior appointment, but his proper course in the circumstances would have l>een not to let his name go forward to tho Appointment Board. Eventually it was decided to refer tho matter to the association's Executive Committee for report. SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright Cape Town, July 21.
