OTAKI NOTES.
On Saturday afternoon members of the Manakau School Committee, assisted by the headmaster, planted a hedge of about 300 shrubs along the southern and westcm boundary fences. The planting was in pursunnco of the Arbor Day idea. Owing- to the destruction by fire of tho hall at Manakau, tho concert arranged by tho school teachers for funds ,to lay down tennis courts, has been postponed. Should a new hall be erected at ari early date, tho committee irill book the opening. night for their entertainment. The hall which was burned down was, twenty years ago, opened with a school concert—so in this case, history may repeat itself. At tho next -meeting of the Manakau Debating Society, tho Subject.- will bo "Humour," each member to contribute to tho programme. The lecture on "England and the English," which was set down for next Thursday, has (at tho wish of, the president) been postponed till the end of tho session. An old age pensioner, named Lyons, well known in Manakau, died on Saturday afternoon.- Deccaicd, who had been ailing for some time, was for a period an inmate of the Otaki Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Bacchus have returned to Mannkou, after an enjovnblo holiday, spent at Rotoma. Mr. Bacchus will bo welcomed ■back-'in hookey circles especially. ' Messrs. Stupplcs and Hildreth have returned to Manakau from trips to Nelson and Hawko's ■ Bay respectively. Mrs. Hildreth and family are still- away. After a trip to the Old Couutrv." Mr G. Kirkloy has just returned to 'Manakau, via America.
