Tho first annual. meeting of tho Ne» Zealand Society of Dorset men Beyond tho Seas was held in. Godbor's Rooms on Thursday evening, the president (Mr. A. M. Smith) occupying the chair. There was a largo gathering of members, including Lieut.-Coloncl A. Humo and Mr. W. H. Eartgill, ef Dannevirke. Tho president, in his opening remarks, lefcrred to tho loss which tho society hadl sustained in tho recent death of Mr. E. Toms. Tlie first annual report and bal-ance-sheet was adopted. It was decided to hold tho second annual dinner in January, 1013, and the secretary was instructed to procure * Dorset cheese 7 for tho occasion. A general discussion took placo on how. to procure new members. Tho election of officers foT the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mr. A. M. .Smith (re-elected);. vice-president?, Liout.-Olonel A. Hume, Messrs. W. H. Rartgill, Tv A. B. Mashew, M. Hopson, H. M. Hayward, and A. Hamilton; hon. treasurer, Mr. H. S. Mooro; hon. secretary, Mr. .1, F. Atkins; assistant secrotarv, Mr. F. Williams; com mi ttee, Messrs. ,T. 'Bcsant, H. Bopor, E. Mace. H. T. Cooper, J. B-. Cornish, and 'J. Slade. The following, is a precis of the annual report:—During the past year the society was entertained: to two most delightful "lecture" evening's by the president (Mr. A. M. Smith) and by the Director of the Museum (Mr. A. Hamilton) respectively. Both of thoso gatherings were well attended, and tho members thoroughly ap. predated tho old memories theso lectures brought back to them. Tho first annual dinner was a decided success. Tho society wishes to especially acknowledge the fervioes of Mr. H. Boper, who worked very hard to mako it tho success it was. The initial concert went off very well. During the year tho secretary visited New South Wales, where he was very'well received by the prominent members of tho Australian Society. They reported fair progress, not as ■ well as .might be expected, considering' they have the whole Commonwealth to operate upon. He , wishes to acknowledge tho courtesy extended to him on behalf of the New Zealand Roctetv by Mr. A. .T. Hare, tho New Smith Wales TTnder-Secretary for Lands, flud Captain H.
