SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE.
A meeting of the Board of Control of the New Zealand Sports Protection Leaguo was held in tho League's offices yesterday afternoon. The president, Sir Georgo Clifford,' Bart., occupied tho chair. The chairman of tho board, tho Hon. H. D. Bell, K.C., wrote intimating that before receiving his appointment as Minister for Internal Affairs, ho deemed it necessary to resign. his position .as a member of tho board of tho New Zealand Sports Protection League. He wished tho league nil. success, but regretted that he was obviously compelled to sever his association with it. ' . ' ' On the motion of" the chairman the resignation was accepted with /regret and tho following letter- was "directed to be conveyed to Mr. Bell:—''At a meeting of the Board of Control of the Sports Protection League it was unanimously ..resolved that your resignation be accepted with regret, the board recognising that it was unavoidable. The board • further desires mo to express to you its sincere thanks for all the interest you have taken, in its work, and at the same time, to congratulate you upon your appointment to the office now held by you." • A sub-committee was appointed to go into tho matter of proposed amendments to tho constitution and to report, after which tho rules as amended will be submitted to the branches for consideration. In regard to a communication from the Oamaru branch suggesting that a donation l>o given to assist in the effort now being made by tho Oamaru public to' raise funds for the purpose of forming a recreation ground, it was resolved to reply intimating that tho board were in sympathy with the project, but regretted that funds wcTe not available. Tho matter, however, was one for the local branch of tho league to take in hand. With regard to a communication from the South Canterbury branch of the league (in which they drew attention to the fact that the Government tax from their club for the season totalled £783, which was a heavy drag on the club's resources, and asking that the leaguo assist in having the tax placed on a more equitable basis), the president intimated that the Racing Conference was approaching the- Minister for Internal Affairs on the subject and the case would be strongly represented without the neoessity of the league's intervention in the meantime. A deputation was appointed to' wait upon the Minister for Internal Affairs with' respect to a request from the 'To Aroha branch of the leaguo with regard to ossistance desired in connection with the proposed addition of new bowling rinks on tho To Aroha Domain.
