MASTERTON NOTES.
The . annual report of the Masterton Bowling Club states that the active membership of the. club Is now seventysix. Tho receipts for the past year amounted to .£237 7s. Cd., and the expenditure to £2U 12s. Gd. The club succeeded in retaining the Booth Cup, and m defending tho Grady Medals. Tho committee suggests that the question, of ■holding ,u centre tournament at Christmas time should be considered. Tho Prime Minister (the Hod. W. P. Massqy) has advised Mr. A. H. Vile that his time is so fully occupied just now with other urgent matters that he would prefer to receive the proposed deputation in regard to an agricultural school for tho Wairurapa at a later date. The grass grub continues to work destruction in the pastures of this 'district. Tho director of experiment farms was recently asked for information as to the Tf-est methods of coping with tho pest. Mr. E. Clifton, in his roply, etates that, last season, the Department arranged for Professor Thomas, of Auckland, and the biologist of tho Department (Mr. Cockayne) to undertake an investigation of this subject. Their joint report has not yet been furnished. The Masterton Boxing Club held a tournament in the Town Hall on Wednesday next. Six events of five rounds each are to be got off, and contestants will be present from Hastings, Palraoreton North, Pahiatua, and elsewhere. Tho curator of tho Masterton fishponds reports that hatching operations are already in progress at the local hatcheries. Tho season is some weeks earlier than was t'hc case last year. Competitors at the pigeon and claybird matches are being entertained bv tho president of tho Masterton Gun Club (Mr. A. 1 , . Whatman) at dinner this evening. A good deal of damage has teen dono by slips on private properties in this district during heavy weather. A. few sheep have* also been. lost. Considering tho heavy downpour, the dnvnago done is comparatively small. The reports concerning damage in tho town have been somewhat exaggerated. Tho overflowing of ono or two crepks, nntl the surface water, caused n. little" inconvenience to residents in some portions of- tho town, but very little dnmnge was done. . At aii extraordinary meeting of the Workers' Mutual Benefit Building Society last evening,' it was decided that th* share-list of the society ho closed, and that a No. 2 Society be started. The fourth, competition in connection with the Masterton Miniature Rifle Club was held last evening, when E.' Smith, J. Murray, and J. M'Gregor secured a "legin" for the "A" class trophy, and J. K. Perry, 11. E. Jones, W. Rosson, and 2. R«ed for the. "B" class.
