LORD HOWE ISLAND.
TROUBLE IN A TINY OCEAN COLONY. By ToleErapn—Press Association-Copyrieht (Rec. July 16, 3.20 p.m.) Sydney, July 16. The State Cabinet has recommended tho appointment of Mr. -Walter Bevan as a Royal Commissioner to inquire into tho Kentia palm seed industry at Lord Howe Island. It is stated that the action has been taken in consequence of certain information which has been received by the Cabinet.
Lord Howe Island is a dependency of New South Wales, and lies 436 miles north-east of Sydney. The population at the census last year was 104. The principal product is the seeds of the Kentia palms, of which thousands of bushels are shipped annually to all parts of the world. The aTea of the island is about 3220 acres, and of this only about 300 acres are suitable • for agriculture. The scenery is picturesque, and the vegetation luxuriant. A steamer calls once a month, and a magistrate, Mr. Prank Farnell, J.P., makes four visits a year, the duties being carried out in an honorary capacity.
