« NOTES AND COMMENTS, TRACK GALLOPS AT TKEXTHAM. IHy Ulencok.l Trenthani has had its full share of the recent rains, and, even sliaild the weather bif.ik line, the track will be heavy lor to-morrow's racing. The lawn has bad a good soaking, but this will not mum Sertoli's inconvenience to visitors, as the club lias already 'arranged to cover the gra-s with boards and straw. In this respect at all events the public will receive more, attention Hum the horses. The latter, however, should lie u>H to tlra heavy suing by to-morrow., as they are having plenty of it iu the training gallops.
Yesterday morning most of (die work was accomplished in rain, and the tracks were very much on the heavy tide. The trial gallop inside the rails and the sand track were in use. Very'few fast gallcps were recorded, though there was, suiuc capital schooling over the big fences. Mira, who was one of the first to show up on the tracks, went a couple of rounds on the sand, and covered the, last four furlongs in SHec—a smart performance. The grey horse has been accepted for ui two races to-morrow, but it is understood tiiat he will run in the Parliamentary Handicap. Countermine was 'allotted useful work on the sand. She looks remarkably well. Brown Trout (Hatch) finished in front of Alexis (Ryan) at the end of six furlongs on the grass, run in lmin. 30isec. Salute and Lo. lleina were companions in a mile gallop on the gnus, the lime being liuiin. B.«ec, Patriotic (Brady) was in front of Mnlga Bill (Telford) at the conclusion of a sixfurlong gallop on the sand, the lime being lmin. 18 -'-ssec., a good gallop. Beacon (Traill) was belter than AYnipunui over (J furlongs, run in a tick under lmin. 30sec. Master Theory (M'Flynn) easily beat Julian and Gaeiio over l! furlongs, which the lirst-named covered in lmin. 2!lsee. This was the best gallop of the morning on the grass. Piriwni, Glenojr], and Ngatirauiiui covered 5 furlongs together on the grass in lmin. Usee. Crown .Pearl and lioyal Arms finished together at the end of a similar journey, which took a second longer to cover. Bollin, afler doing useful work, sprinted home from the half-mile post.' Hawick (M'Sweoney) and Torhelle (.M'Flynn) jumped six of the big fences together. Doth gave good displays,'the former .pleasing most. ' Taiaha (M'Flynn) mid Captain Jingle (O'Connell) also jumped six tenons of the. big country. The former gave by far the bast display of the morning. Captain Jingle, who jumped satisfactorily, appenroi to be a trifle lame when walking off the track. Armagh (M'Flynn) and Hautere (Dcerey) went two rounds of the big fences without mishap. They cleared twelve fences together. Compass '('l'- Jones), Paritutu (V. Coleman), and Zante (W. J. Porter) wero schooled over the big country, taking six fences on the way. All three jumped remarkably well, the first two making good lime over the journey, and running right away from Zante. Among the other horse* to work were Darby Paul, Sandy Paul, Black Northern, Diovolo, Odessa, Ceylon, Mount Victoria, Kuutsford, Gold Bird,' Sea Queen. Soman, Tui Ciikobau, Uranium, Gay Lawless, Amaru, Ladronc, Kcw, Courtly, Master Paul, White Cockade, Shuja, Antarctic, Loch Mabon, Obligant, St. Amelia, Leatuiki, Idealism, Outward, Sir Tristram, Deploy, Icel, Grandee, Sea Queen, and Takituma. Neiroive, a Trial Plate candidate, rcaglierl Trenthani yesterday afternoon from Awapuui. Antarctic '-.wot very lame afi|>r working yesterday and is not likely to be started at the meeting. In his present condition the chestnut could have no chance against such as Compass and Hautere. Anyone who remembers how well Compass looked when ho won the Winter Hurdles at Trenthani four ycors ago, will recognise the same bright muscular appearance in the old horse at the present time. Thsre can be no doubt that he is now. very well and seems certain to win a good steeplechase before the jumping season close?. ■•■' ' i. Should Black Northern be started in - the big steeplechase to-morrow, it is understood that ho will be ridden by the successful horseman, A. M'Flynn, who will nb:o have the mounts on Taiaha iu the Hack Steeples and Master Theory in the Winter Hurdles. When Hautere jumped the big country at Trenthani yesterday it was his first schooling effort, since he won the Great -Northern Steeplechase last month. In the circumstances, his performance was all the more pleasing. There, is always plenty of work for a willing horseman before a big meeting.. A. M'Flynn discovered thisl yesterday morning/ He jumped twenty-four steeplechase fences on different horses and also rode' in a number of gallops on the flat.. Postilion (Advance—Brown. Spec), who is to be a 'competitor at Trenthani, is said to be one of the best looking horses in training hi the Dominion. Probably the most promising of the hack 'chasers that will bo seen «t Trenthani is Taiaha, who is on the improve and who even' appears to have made great advancement since landing at Trenthani from Gisborne. It is understood thot, after disposing of the simpler tasks before him at: the Wellington Kncing Club's meeting, he will be sent south to cam Grand National honours. The Xew Zealand -Unlit-weight jockey, C. Emerson, who is at pro-sent in New South Wales, will be riding to-morrow-at the Clarcnco Hiver Jockey Club's meeting at Grafton, where he has gone under special engagement to vide Mr. J. Whitworth's horses, Fugue, Elfbolt, and Black and Gold. The English mail shows that, the race for the Derby was quite an uninteresting affair so far' as the aotual win was concerned. What appears to have been the most exciting feature was the tremendous struggle between the despised' Tracery and Pintadeau for third place. Until the horses had actually passed the nest there was a doubt as to whether the lioyal colours had triumphed or not. The pair were locked together at the finish, but the judge declared for Tracery; and explained subsequently that it was by a short head only that Pintadeau had been, deprived of the place honours.
