DECREASE IN CRIME.
NEW SOUTH WALES PRISONS RETORT.
By Tclesraph-Press AssoriaUon-Cor.rriEht Sydney, July 15. • The 'annual report of the Comptroller of New South AVales Prisons shows (hat there has been a continued steady decrease in. tho prison population. At the end of 1311 it totalled 1249, a decrease of 71 as compared with the previous year. Though tho population of the Stato had increased by 55,000, the ratio of the prison (0 the general population'is 71 per hundred thousand, compared with 221 in 1874. The Comptroller recommends, the establishment of isolated industrial homes for inebriates, similar to those maintained by the Salvation Army in New Zoaland.
