THE HUTT ROAD.
COST TO BE APPORTIONED. , Mr -, W -.S-, Short (Assistant-Untler-Secre-tary for Public Works) has been appointed to act as sole commissioner in apportioning tho cost of constructing the ilutt Read amongst the various local bodies interested. These bodies are: Tho Wellington City Council, Onslow Borough Council, Petono Borough Council, Low.tr Hutt Borough Council, Eastbourne BormHi Council, Miramar Borough Council, Hiitt County Council, Makara County Council, .Tohnsonville Town Board, and Upper Hutt town Beard. it ll !''^'-'? 1 ' 1 is appointed i« tonus 1 of the Hutt Railway and Road Improvement Act, 1903, and the amending Act cif 1911.- Sitting as commissioner, he will hear representations from tho various loeal bodies in regard to allocating tho cost c!' tho road. No date has yet-been fixed for tho preliminary sitting. Under the Hurt Railway and Road Improvement Act, 11103, only five local bodies were called upon to contribute towards Ihe cost of the new Hutt Road. After that date live additional local bodies were constituted, thu areas under (heir control being taken out of the area originally covered by the Act. These bodies are': The Upper Hutt Town Board, the Eastbourne Borough Council, the Miramar Borough Council, the Johnsonville Town Board, and tho Makara County Council. By an Act pasAcd in September, mil, these five bodies were added to the list of those which are held jointly responsible for tho cost of the Hutt Road. When the Hutt Road was under discussion in the House in 1911, Mr. Millar, then Minister for Railways, intimated that the Government vrould shcrtly set up a commission to apportion the cost of the road amongst the Various local bodies concerned. He .stated that, full information would be placed in the hands of the commissioner .as to "every yard of stuff and every yard of stone used, and tho whole time spent on the work, because a separate account had been kept; so tint if honourable members think they arc going to show that certain charges that are debited to the read ought to have been charged to (he railway they will find out their mistake." ' During the same debate Mr; Millar stated that the cost of the whole work, including the road, had Ijeen and (he cost of , the road approximately •£100,000.' Mr. Short was appointed to act as commissioner by Mr> Myers, late Minister for Railways, acting in pursuance of a direction by the Mackenzie Cabinet.
