THE BACON INDUSTRY.
QUALITY OF PIGS IMPROVING. The prevalence of disease amongst pigs was referred to at the annual meoting of the Wellington Farmers' Bacon Company. The chairman of directors, Mr. J. C. Cooper, mentioned that latterly there had been a considerable improvement in the finality of pigs Pont to the works, but previously a large percentage had boon affected. A Jlaiigatamoka pettier ir.stanced liow the bulk of two truck loads of {lorkeiw were on one occasion found to be affected with tuberculosis. The opinion was expressed by another farmer that thp producer and not the company should bear the los sof pigs font to the works, and which were afterwards condemned, as it would make settlers more careful oiid conscientious. Against this, however, it was contended that it was difficult to detect the symptoms of disease in pigs. Tho smallncss of the incrciusc in recent years is largely attributable to tho very larec numbers which have been slaughtered for export and local consumption, and it is significant that the opinion is generally held that sheep numbers were, prior to the drought, onitft as hish as could with safety be carried in normal seasons.
