BEEF CATTLE.
WILL THERE BE A 'SHOETAGE.
Discussing the question of tho supply of beef cattle a Mnnawatu stock man informed a "Standard" reporter that if there is a'repetition of the recent uncongenial weather beef cattle will be almost unprocurable. There had been heavy mortality amongst calves in the Jlanawatu during the past few weeks and he himself had lost a dozen already. In the opinion of the farmer in question the time has come when winter feed must be provided. Young slock, the farmer added, "wanted feeding on chaff and turnips for four or five months in the winter, and then they are not as good as those reared by their own mothers. AVhat we were going to do for bullocks in another year or two he did not know. . . . Before many years, he continued, our population will have to Append on frozen beef out of the freezing chambers in tho winter, for there will be nothing , else. Meat was decidedly dearer here now thnn in many of the Honi'e cities which draw their supplies from Xcw Zealand.
