In the semi-final, of tho 400 irtetres swimming race (freo Btyle), at the (Olympic Games, Hodgson put up a record with his timo of Smin; 25 'i-ssec, beating Hatfield (EngUind) and [Foster (England). Hardwick (smin. 31sec.) was first'tin tho second heat, after a fine struggle with Lastorres (Hungary).. Italy wns third, in smin. 37sec, and Champion fourth. America won three out of tho first four places in the final heat of tho 3000 metres team race. Sweden was second. THE AMATEUR STATUS. MUCH CONTROVERSY BAKED. (Rep. July 11. 5.5 p.m.) Stockholm, July 13. Thero is much controversy on tho question of the amateur definition. Some countries by Stato grants of Wg funds enable men to abstain from work and devoto their time to training for longer periods than accords with Great ideas of what constitutes an amateur. Tho British athletes resent tho newspaper imputations, and declare, that if tho Americans competed finder similar conditions they would have fower victories.
