"At tho instance of the Secretary of State fir tho Colonies, Mr. Lewis Earcourt, tho Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Crosby, has opened a fund for tho purposo of raising .£IOO,OOO, to enable the London School of Tropical Medicine to extend its operations and establis.li a nursing homo for sufferers from tropical diseases.

A memorandum issued on Hay 13 last by tho Colonial Office announces that from July 1 the Sleeping Sickness Bureau will be known as tho Tropical Diseases Bureau. Tho bureau, had its origin in tho International Coaferonco on Sleeping Sickness, held in London, under tho presidency of lord Fitzmauriee, in June, 1907, nnd March, li) 08, to concert measures for the control of that disease, which was spreading rapidly in tropical Africa. Lord Crewo,'miring his term of ofiico as Colonial Secretary, and Sir. Le.wis Harcourt luivo interested themselves in the expansion of the bureau. This entails increased expenditure. Tho. funds are being found by the Treasury, the Indian Government, the Sudan Government, the Union of .South Africa. Ceylon, tho Fed-' crated Malay States, .Southern Nigeria, tho Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, the Gambia, Fiji, Trinidad, and Jamaica, the annual available sum being approximately .£iooo. Having outgrown tho accommodation generously provided by the Boyal Society, tho bureau will have its quarters Imperial Institute. Tho now bureau will deal with all exotic diseases which are prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical regions, and will publish at frequent intervals a tropical diseases bulletin, which will take the nlaco of the present sleeping sickness bulletin. Tho director will have the help of an assistant director and a number of exports, who will be responsible for-the different subjects, and w.ill furnish authoritative reviews and summaries of published pa-\ pers, to appear in the bulletin.
