NEW FIRE QUENCHER

"Kyl-Fyre" is the name of a firo extinguisher new to Wellington, and an exhibition of its capabilities was given yesterday. A vacant section of land at the coiner of Cuba and Wakcfield Streets (opposite the Town Hii.ll) was the scene of tho operations. There was a gathering of tho public. "Kyl-Fyre" is a dry pink powder, contained in. a cylindrical tube 20in. long by 2!in. in diameter, weighing Gib. What is' claimed for it is that when the powder strikes heal, it immediately gener-' ates a powerful gas, which, by displacing the oxygen in fihe air, quickly extinguishes the flames. . For tho first demonstration, a bucket was half-filled with Prntt's motor spirit, and ignited. Taking a handful of the powder, tho demonstrator sprinkled it over the flames, which immediately ceased to exist. Next, somo of tho motor spirit was poured over the ground, and a match put to it. A little of the pqwder was thrown on the flames, which were verv quickly quenched.. The demonstrator next turned his attention to a small oblong pit filled with tar, and after applying a little .of the spirits, ho set it alight'. The pit was «oon a blazing mas.?, and the application of half a tube of "Kyl-Fyre" saw the fire out. The last but not the ieast demonstration was the quenching of a lire m a largo case of three sides. The inside of tho case was coated with tar and many long- sticks were also inside. Bomo of tho motor spirit was then dealt with. A match was applied, and soon tho caso was a roaring mass of (lames. After getting a.good hold,, the demonstrator' armed with n tube of "ftyl-Fyre," made a.short but effective attack on'tho flames A demonstration of tho working of the Austral Automatic Safety Fire Escape was also given.
