MUNICIPAL ORCHESTRA.
The Municipal Orchestra is "going tho pace," and tno. fact is—it is said with regrqt— reflected in its A ooncert was'given last week, and, ordinarily, another was'not duo for three weeks,, or, at least, a fortnight, so that a. reasonable time should bo given to work up another programme. The result of this undue haste is probably accountable for the absonce of little that was, "new to the regular patron of these excellent concerts. Of tlio six numbers in which tho. orchestra was ooncerucd last evening, two —tho "William Toil" overture and "Finlandia"—figured on tho programme, and two others have been heard on more than one occasion this season, a fact which, eliminated the element of novelty from the programme. There were compensations, however,. one being a well-consider-ed interpretation of Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony," which was played in Wellington only as late as Sunday week by the Wellington Professional Orchestra. This glorious work, which is rightly written down as one of the most beautiful of musical creations, glows with divine melody of entrancing sweetness, rich in contrasts, and arrestive by reason of the genius which is employed in weaving the flowing themes so as to present the full range of instrumental colour. Tho very creditable performance given by tho orohestra indicated an improvement both in facility and finish which is being made, and whets the appetite for more music of the same character. The "William Tell" overture with its fine massed offccts and military spirit, was played with .splendid verve a.nd precision, and ' both' in that selection and in tho great tone poem of Sibelius's "Finlandia," the brass' section calls for praise. In the latter piece tho prayer was. very smoothly played by tho wood-winds. Tho orchestra also played Mendelssohn's "Cornelius" march; and Sibelius's "Vo-lse Triste,"..a 'beautiful number, the subdued sadness of which was marred by banging doors. The orchestra also supplied a blurred background to the 'cello , solo, "Sur lo Sac" (Godard), played by Mr. Prank Johnstone. The nuinDer was unattractive, and' the accompaniment the reverse of sympathetic. The vocalist of the evening was Miss Muriel Bennett, who possesses a musical and sympathetic mezzo soprano voice, rich and full in tho middle and lower registers, and has a call on some pretty head notes in the top register. She sang Gounod's "Ave- Maria" ■ acceptably, but was much more at home in the charming ballad, "Summer in the Country"' (Lohr), sang as an encore. 'Her second part songs were "Lovely • Spring" (Coeneu) and "The Pigeon" (Lehmnnn). Mr. Horace Hunt played her accompaniments, . and Mr. Johnstone supnlied a 'cello otbligato to the "Ave Marin." Tho orchestra- was conducted by Mr. J. Maughan'Barnett with his customary skill. • The next concert, of the. Municipal Orchestra will be given on Tuesday, July 23. ■■ . ■
