"SOLID, TRUE, AND LOYAL."
THE REFORMPARTY IN ACTION. REMARKS BY ONE" OF. THE WHIPS. _ Some people max think that the victory in a political battle rests "upon a mere matter of ''counting..noses," but, as a fact, in politics discipline ami generalship count for nearly as mnch as they do in the more desperate business of war. Spsaking yesterday of the etwggle which ended in the decisive defeat of the Mackenzie- Ministry, Mr. D. M. Guthrie, one .of the Reform Part}- Whips, bestowed high praise both upon (ho Reform Party and its leader. "During the. whole time HiaLthe debate was in progress," he said, "tltb party was so. 'solid, true, and loyal that the ..Whips found their task a very easy one. Every member was in his plaee-and available, -and at no time duriiia the debute was .there any necessity . for distrust, although-, strenuous efforts were made to fe'pfc feme of those who threw in their lot ."with'the ltefonii party to change their minds. Despite the trying circumstances, every -member both of the old party and of tlioso who joined was resolute and determined. Jt was no easy task that our members were set, to sit tight—ready for action, but inactive. Many of them received messages from their friends outbids, asking why on earth they did not adapt brisker tactics, and that did not make-'it any.easier for the members who were called -upon to wait patiently until {.lie proper, moment for action arrived. Especially should it be mentioned those v/koae duty it was to sit close, watching the debate, and ready for any emergency. Notable-amongst those who undertook this duty was Mr. Nosworthy,. the member for Ashburton, who remained in his place with splendid patience, and hnrdly eve.r 1-aft tlio House. The goodwill*and devotion which were displayed," said Mr. Guthric,'. "came as 'no surprise to the party'Whips.'who'were Mill uvare of tlio perfect* discipline , of the party, and its-loyalty to its leader. ] ... '-"Iwy. •jSftSSS3&- .d&PfeJ , -; Pfgwieralehip,"
added, the member for. Oroua, "augurs well for the future leadership of the party which will, without doubt, in tho future play a very important part in establishing the prosperity and well-being of the. Dominion."
"In fairness to the'other side," Mr. Guthirie remarked, in .conclusion, "the Eeform party whips would liko to say.that the best feeling existed between the whips of both parties right through tho debate."
