HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Mayor, Mr. E. P. Burniy, presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, held last evening. There were also present: Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Hoots,. Clcndon, Kempthorne, Hodgens, mid Hawthorne. In reference to- complaints from residents living on. the north side of tho Park, the engineer stated that'the patching of roads ond footpaths was being carried on in accordance with the council's instructions. •It was found that it would require so much to be (Jona to put portions of these paths in anything like good order that it had been decided to make approaches from each gate, so that easy access could be got to the good footpaths on the southern sido of the road. It was reported that, up till the present date, 573 permits had been issued under the drainage and sanitary by-laws. Tiio total wafer connections to date were 899. A letter was received from tho local fire brigade, stating that, on the occasion of a recent there was an insufficient pressure of water this being apparently owing to the fact that the putnpingengine was not working. Mr. J. Ingram, engineer in charge of tho council's pumping station, stated in nnswer that he had gone .to the water-works shortfy after 2 a.m. on the dato when the fire occurred, and had stayed there until after 8 a.m. No ono came to inform him that the fire, was ont, and this had occurred on many previous occasions.—lt was decided that a member of the fire brigade should. in future inform Mr. Ingram whon his services wero required and also when there was not further need of tho engines.

It was reported that good progress is being made on the eastern drainago section. There is now less water to contend with, and, recently, there have been no large logs, calculated to delay the work, havp been encountered. Previously Ember such as this caused inconvenience, and water in the rfpppor twfa of the trenches had also /hindered tho engineer. A new 10 b.h.p. oil engino has been obtained for the septic tank in tin's section, and it will presently lie installed. It was mentioned that about twenty complaints had been forwarded to tho engineer lately, all dealing with the gas supply. Some of the writers blamed the pressure, and fiomo tho meters. Tho engineer, in tho course of his report, stated that ihero was no doubt that the gas pressure was, at time?, very poor, especially early in the evening. Sometimes, also, the meter was at fault, but, in a ereal: many" cases, tho trouble wa.= really in the burners. . People put mandles on, and expected them to last for months without further attention. If tho burners were thoroughly cleaned before a new mantle was.n"t<Mi.a"d the nmntle not used too long, much better results would in most cases bo obtained.
