RE-VALUING THE CITY.
THE MAYOR TO INQUIRE,
The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) -was coneultod yesterday aa to whether or not a revaluation of the city of Wellington was to be made during the present year in new of the material alterations which have taken *place during the past two cr three years. Mr. M'Laren said that the matter of a revaluation had, been considered by the Finance Committee, which had recommended that the work be not undertaken this year, us it could not Iμ taken into consideration in getting out the rate-papers. There wero parts of the city, Mr. M'Laren thought, winch needed revaluing. Greater Wellington, for instance, ho considered should be revalued. One lady living in the vicinity of Vivian Street had recently called on him, asking that that part of the city bo submitted to a revaluation. "I had to explain to her," said the Mayor, saiiling, "that an alteration in value docs not mean a reduction of rates. Whatever tho values are, tho city must have revenue enough for its maintenance. "it is doubttul," continued the Mayor, "if there would be much alteration in tho city. There might be a block. hero and there that would bo required to be dealt with. At Northland, for instance, drainago works wero to be carried out, and in that matter they Woro seeking the cooperation of tho Karori Borough Council in formulating a comprehensive scheme to drain that part of the city borough, which, if carried out, would probably mean tho formation of a special rating area, and that would mean a revaluation. "I am going into tho matter of tho revaluation of the city," continued tho Mayor, "and will bring it before tho council a little later in. the year."
