His Excellency the Governor .and Lady Islington are to attend the opening performance of Miss Margaret Cooper at the Opera House on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday morning at 11 o'clock his Excellency will entertain at a light luncheon at Government House the officers of tho Defence Forces now visiting Wellington.
On Friday the Governor will attend tho opening of (ho Masterton Competitions, and on Saturday evening he will lie entertained by the Orphans Club.
A Press Association tolegram from fareyinouth states that Mr. A. Duncan, liailway Traffic Manager, who has been promoted to Wellington, was met by representative citizens, nnd presented with a Chesterfield couch for himself nnd o. hot-water jug and kettlo for Mrs. Duncan. Lulogistic speeches wero made regarding the tact and ability with which Sir. Duncan had carried out his duties. He left yesterday morning for Christcliurch, en route to Wellington.
Mr. E. T. Sadd, Commissioner of Crown Lands at Nelson, who has been transferred to Napier, was presented by tho Nelson Chamber of Commerce yesterday witli an illuminated address expressing appreciation of his services to the district in advancing land settlement. Ihe business community was well represented at the gathering. Officers of the Department presented Mr. Sadd with a roll-top desk, and he was also entertained by the Nelson branch of the Surveyors' Institute.—Press Association.
Tho death has ocourred (says our Feilding correspondent) of Mr. James Wilson, of Makino, aged 83 years. Mr. Wilson was born in Ireland, and camo to New Zealand with the 65th Regiment G7 years ago. ■ After he left the army he farmed at the Upper Hutt for a number of years, and, 30 years ago, he settled in tho Makino district, He had been ailing for the past five years. Mrs. Wilson survives her husband, and there are six sons and five daughters.Tho Rev. W. I'. Pnterson, D.D., Professor, of Divinity at Edinburgh. University, passed through Auckland . by the Marama on Friday. He lias been spending his vacation in Australia,'and is returning to Scotland via Vancouver. The death is announced of Mr, W. Gordon Rich, of Christohurch, who arrived in Auckland in 1852, and subsequently settled in the South Island; aged 84 years. Mr. Edward Hiorus, another well-known resident of Christehuroh, died on Sunday; aged 75 years. : Word has been received by the Southern Cross Mission steamer, which arrived at Auckland yesterday from . the New Hebrides and Solomon Islands, of tho death of the Rev. G. H. 'Andrew, , at liiigotu, on April 26.—Press Association.
