Estimates in the House of Commons, it was moved to decrease the ■ salary of Colonel Seely, Secretary of. State for War, on tho ground that the Home defence was dangerously inadequate, amounting almost 'to a shani. Colonel Seely declared that the difficulty of invading Great Britain had been increased by the recent increase in submarines, and the use of aeroplanes for reconnoitring. The Territorials were not all that was to be desired, but they worn not inadequate. It would be impossible to secure the co-operation of tho Dominions if Great Britain acted on tho principle that a soldier was useless unless ho had been trained for two years. Australia and New Zealand, with their short drill periods, tad produced magnificent men. Tho motion was negatived, the result of the voting being:— For the motion 190 Against the motion '' 230 Majority against 40 Many members the Labour party were absent. . - " '
