MOTOR-CAR FATALITY.
, CAPSIZES OVER A BANKi . (By Teloßraph.-Prew Association.) ' Christohurcli, July 7. A motor-car fatality occurred about 2.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at Poster's Cutting, between Soargill ond EUielton on tho ChrietchurclhChoviot Road, as the result of which Miss Hughes,' about 19 yoars'of ago, daughter of Mr. I*. W. Hughes, of Port Hobinson, lost her life. Yesterday morning, Mr. John Puchol, farmer, of Domett, left town in a motor-car which he was' driving. With him was Miss Hughes, his sister-in-law, and his thrco-yoar-old daughter. When going up Foster's Cutting on tho slow speed, and' when three or four chains up tho lull, the car suddenly stopped and commenced to go backwards. Sir. Puchel put on tho' foot-brake, but finding that it was not holding sufficient, ho tried to work tho hand brake. Beforo ho could do 60 the cur backed into a very stcop bank, and I capsized completely, all four wheels in tho air. Tho occupants wcro pinned beneath. After considerable struggling, Puchol got froa from tho car, but peforo ho got free he hoard Miss Hughes giVo three faint moans. By weans of a jack he got the car up. Ho found Miss Hughes dend, but the infant uninjured, After two unsuccessful attempts to get medical aid by telephone, Mr. Puohel got to Wair. kari this morning, and was brought into town by motor-car. His left arm was dislocated. On Friday, when coming to town, the car stopped dead on a flat road, and he had it attended to, when- ho reached tho town, but on the way put yesterday it stopped after going over Waipari bridge on some loose shingle, and some difficulty was experienced in getting it re-started.
