VACANT LAND.
A BAT OF PLENTY PETITION,
Tho Hon. W. D. S. Macdonnld presented a petition to Parliament yesterday from E, Black and 121 other.-, representing that there are over ono .thousand square miles of unoccupied Native and Crown land in iho Y\ aimara and Whakatane valleys, and close to tho route of the hast Coast Railway, suitable for grazing, dairying, and agricultural purposes, that for many years tho Native owners have been agitating for the sale of a lar"0 portion of this block to the Government in order to raise money to improve tho balance of their land; that many intending settlers, tired of waiting for this Innd, have drifted to Australia, America, and other countries, where every encouragement was given them to purchase land for homes and that thftro wore still in tho district a large number of men hoping that they will soon be given a chance to take up land in their own country.
The petitioners pray the House to take such steps as will ensure a larj»e portion of the block being offered for selection in suitable areas.
