BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION". The report of the British India. Steam navigation Company for 19X1-12 shows a. profit <jf £137,500, after allowing for de-.'ncrc3-sing the reserve fund b> feSMMbringing it up t 0 ,£SDO,OCO, while XlcD.ooo ims hi'en tran.-frrrr'ii to insurance fund, making a total of £552,700 fit credit of this account. The dividend on tho shares is made up to tho csual level of 7 a per cent., and there then remains to bo carried forward £15,7C0. That the company has made groat' progress during the past year is evident; nevertheless, it is rather difficult to understand the precise position, for the balancc-idicet shows, on the debit side, "debts and liabilities, including bills payable, remittances appertaining to next year's accounts and smidry deposits _ with tho company, £1,127,218.'" What this entry moans it is hard to understand, a.nd to group eo many items together is, to say the lea-sl of it, very confusing. Another matter to which attention I may be called is that, after malting the I very substantial allocation to the insurance fund referred to above, giving, os already stated, a total of £652,700 at credit of that account, the directors find it necessary to state that, "even at this figure the insurance fund will be none too large, in view of the fact that the company carries til" entire risk of the fleet, and tho directors will be glad to see it materially increased " The board appear to have realised very suddenly the insufficiency of the insurance fund, though, possibly, the recent disasters experienced by other companies may have quickened tho perception of the directors in regard to this essential matter.— "Financial Times."

The difficulty, they say, is in getting supplies that will be likely to pa??, but there are one or two districts, where tne crops are retried to be cJe.au, where supplier may be obtained if the growers are prepared to give the necessary certificate.
