ANNUAL MEETING OF THORNDON

CLUB

Tho annual general meeting of tho Thorndon Howling Club was held Inst evening. Mr. Scato.i presided, and there was a large attendance.

The chairman moved tho adoplion of the report and balance-sheet, and, in doing so, mentioned I hat it would bo necessary (o raise the animal subscription. The expenditure showed a. slight increase, made up in wages, and green account. 'Ihe rates were extra. Ho also mentioned that the stock of top-dressing had been paid for, but will not be wanted next season. The greens were not in a satisfactory condition, this, however, nut being the fault of the caretaker, but of bad soil.

The motion lo adopt the report was seconded by Mr. V. Dimock, ami carried. Jn regard to the suggestion to increase subscription, one member stated that he had no objection U) paying the extra amount, but he thought that utlier members who did not gel. much recreation out of the club proceedings, might i'cel disinclined to pay. Mr. ,]. G. Chambers complimented tho directors on the amount of work 111 at had been carried out during the past year. Touching on the balance-sheet, however, ho thought that a liltlo moro economy might b<! exercised.

Dimock moved: "That no ground committee bo appointed, but that tiie uareLiker have sole charge, and be responsible to tho directors.' Mr. Dimock then moved: "That the Maich Committee he elected at the annual meeting, and that a selector and a viccwleetor (to net ns selector in the absence of the selector) bo appointed as a Hatch Committee to select the skips only; tho selnctav and skips then to fseUe.t teams. Tho motion was carried. Mr. J. if. King was elected selector, and Jlr. .1. I. Mason vice-selector. ' Considerable discussion ensued on tho nroppsal of raising the annual subscription to .£! 3s. I'inally Jlr. Diiuock mevol as a, recommendation to the directors: "That the subscription bo S3Jis.' 'i'his was seconded by Mr. J. T. King, lm'- on being put to the meeting was Mr J T. Mason then moved: "That the subscription bo £3, this including locker fee."—Carried. Colonel R. J. Collins moved, mid Mr. Mackintosh seconded, a vote of thanks to thi! retiring directors. This was unanimously carried.

The" following is a precis of tho seventeenth annual report:—The list of receipts ami expenditure discloses Hint tlio club started Hie season with an overdraft of £Ti lbs. 9(1., and closed with an overdraft of .£45 ISs. Bd., showing that, with (he existing expondituTo for wages and upkeep of tho greens, the present sub-, ecription is not sufficient. Tlio season was opened October 14, 1911, and play continued until Slay 4, Wl2. The thanks of tlio club aroiduc to those ladies who presided on the various occasions at the afternoon tea tables. The previous scanm closed with a membership of 148, and this season with 14G. Tlio club has lost three members through death, Messrs. F. Jlulcs, F. J. M'Parland, mid W. 11. Quick, the lnM-nnraitl ono of the oldest members of. the club. Green's Commit, leo Report.—The lower green, on the whole, played well, although showing signs of/wear towards tho end of the seasou. Tho upper group, was disappointing, ai it was expected that (lie cam shown in levelling, top-dressing and sowing duri'.U the off-season would have given much better results. An export, was called in. to adviso N ou the best method of treating both greens. lie considered the soil was altogether too stiff, and wanted opening up and making more friable before a good •sulo of grass could bo obtained. Consequently a top-dressing of sand and manure lias been applied, which should givo good results. The thanks of the club are again duo to Mr. Soaton for his services in taking tlio levels on both greens.

Tho Match Committee re[ioi't that all tlm club competitions woro played and finished in fairly good time, with the'following results:—Club Kink Match (l'o>« Ci'pl—Tho team consisting of Messrs. W. ]. Clark, Gamble. Cohen, and Hogben (s.), proywTto be the winners, .having won all four games. Tho play-off, for tho Inkier of the. cup resulted in .Mr. L. Cohen being tho winner. Champion Pairs (Club Trophies)— Won by Messrs. Thomson and Cohen (s.). Champion Singles (Grace Cup and President's Trophy)— Won by Mr. .1. I). Gray. liegimiers' Bowls (Vice-President's Trophy)— Won by Mr. Greening. 'J'horndon Roses—Nineteen games wore played during tho season, teams skipped by Mr. .T. M. King winning nine games. Tho present holders are Messrs. Stevenson, C. Barrnud, Mason, and Chittey (ej, Sovernl enjoyiiblo and exciting games woro played for tho Shamrocks and Jleywood Buckles. Tho club was represented at 'the. Centre Tournament in January by six rinks, nml Mr. Jackman's team w'ns successful in winning six games out. of eight. At tho Northern Howling Association Touriutm»j>t, held in Wellington, the c|ub entered four rinks, the- rink skipped by 7!i. Kerr winning their section! Senior Ikr.Timls—The club again took part in these contests, with the. result of two vins and two losses. .Tunior Pennants— The junior team performed very creditiil.ly, having six wins and Inyo lo.'-fes. During the season some very interesting ganies were played by our members for tiw Kdvrin Feathers, Hill Pius, and Junior Stars.
