NEW METHODS.

• ft , HAILWAYMEN AND THE GOVERNMENT. It is staled'that improved relations bo< tween the. Minister for Railways and the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants have induced tho latter body to abandon meantime tho policy of petitioning Parliament for redress of second division grievances. On Satuj-day the i.iccutivo Council of the society adopted tho following resolution :— That, as tho result of variou6~interriews with tho Minister and railway management, this council, representing 6200 .members, has decided to abandon the petition as placed -before Parliament in 1911. On being interviewed, itho president of tho Amalgamated Society (Mr. IV. T. Wilson, of Palmerston North) explained that this resolution had been unanimously adopted by tho society's executive at the conclusion of an important scries of interviews with tho Minister for Railways and the Generali Manager (Mr. , Ronavne). Somo of those interviews worm lengthy, and all were characterised by a spirit of frankness and good feeling. Tho Minister asked that nothing should be kept back, and the members of tho ex- ( ccutivo h.'.d taken advantage of his invitation to thoroughly ventilate tho differences existing between _ tho • Department and tho second division. "Wo conclude our work," said Mr. Wilson, "feeling that when our members hear tho details they will bo well satisfied with tho results to' date. I do not sav that wo have complete causa for satisfaction, because some important matters we raised have not been finally settled, but tho degree of success already achieved justifies mo in saying that we ore pleased with what has been conceded, ■ and we have absolute confidence in Mr. Myers's sincerity and sympathy. , A greatly improved feeling will at once, result in the f-ervicc, and this will give further impetus to tho movement for new members, which has been .inaugurated with phenomenal success, nearly 300 bavins joined within two months. The gonoral secretary (Mr. Mack) and myself will shortly visit all tho society's branches —now nearly fifty'in number."
