AND HOW TO" CURE IT. (By Tolccraph.—Press Association.) Hastings, Juno 29, In speaking to the annual report of tho Hastings Chamber of Commerce tho president (Mr. E. H. Williams) made an instructive refefcnee to the labour unrest. After iroviowing the position ho wid: "Whatever tho remedy may bo, I sussest that Socialism, as popularly understood, will not cure ills we suffer from. I venture to assert that Socialism will not tako deep root in Now Zealand if the people aro wise enough to develop the country by subdividing tho land, putting on it as auauy bona-fido settlors as it con. carry. If that is done- it would be well to grant settlors tho easiost possible terms so that tho laud can be occupied anil brought into profitable use as soon m possible. By this means only would stable, government be obtained in New Zealand for useless fads will find no 'support f rom men who make their homo on the land, and who justly claim that, if they work and use their energy and ability m bringing their allotments into profit they ore ■ entitled to all the benefits that they ran derive therefrom. That class of man is worth his weight iu gold (x> his country. Ho is engaged in constructive work as against tho destructive methods adopted by tho man who will not work and endeavours to prevent his feUow-mau from doing so." '
