NOTES AND! COMMENTS. -
[By Glkicoe.] The IMrkenhead gelding Alpheus was" the first 'New Zealand (Jup candidate to win a race sinco the nominations were niadii kno.ni. There was not much merit in tho performance, however, as the field did not. contain a useful hack. ■ T. Pi'ilchard was removed to his home at tho Hull last week, and his medical advisor intends to shortly permit him to move about.on crutches. The victorious march of backers was brought to a temporary check at Napier last γ-uel;,- when they failed to locate tlio winners, and favourite after favourite went under. It is hard to say why they should not have maintained the run, which they have had during tho past eix months. Tho going was splendid for this timn of the year, but good.horses were few, and, in many rases, were not seen at- their best. Nothing "stood out" on -either day. ■•-.> The club will only want α-faw more meetings similar to last week's-to enable it to become a serious rival to the llawke's Bay Metropolitan Club. . ... '•• : Tlio Finland gelding Zealand, who won a race, at Mdonee Valley last month, is to bo tried at hurdle racing by\Maurice Jl'Grath, and' may mako his first appearanoe in this role at Flcmington on Saturday next, when he has an engagement in the Maiden Hurdles. The withdrawal of Wimmera from the Fiemington National Hurdles probably moans that tho Merrivveo gelding lias gone wrong, as he could not bo said to be badly treated with list. 51b. Ho carried 10st. 91b. when he won tho Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie, and was afterwards weighted at list. 111b. and 12st. lib. There is no stall No. 13 at tho Lexington, Kentucky, track. . This number was long ago dropped "in connection with om'vthing at Iho famous trotting ground. Tho'track management is not particularly superstitious, but many of its patrons are. When tho last mail left England, F. Wontton was again'at tho head of the list of winning riders,- wi,th 28 wins. IK was closely followed by his old rival, 1. Mnliei', wiiohad scored "G times. Sunburnt Snd Blackpool, who ran second and third in the' Flying Handicap at Moorefield on Suturclay, are both Now Zealand-bred- horses. Kin" Darius, who won tho Williamstown Steeples on Saturday, was also successful in a cross-country event at Mooneo Valley a fortnight ago. He does not appear to have- been entered for tho -V.R.G. ■■Grand National Stcoplechas-e to be decided next Saturday week, but his namo figures among the nominations for. tho Australian Steeplechase to bo run at Caulfield on August 10. . The Gisborne Rocincr Club's, meeting takes place on Thursday and Friday next, Tho competitors will include a Jorge number of Auckland horses.
Taniainuno, full-brother to Kakaina and Miss Winsome, is ngflin in work at EllersHβ. Armagh, who is entered for the steepleehasu events at Trentham and Riccarton, will probably 1)0 given a run nt Gisborne (his week. At tho conclusion of that fixture ho will bo shipped homo to Auckland and afterwords brought to Wellington, by rail in company with Jlaiitere and Okniliau. Tho Australian owner, Mr. I?. W. Clancy, who has been having a run of sucoefs lately, went close to winning a double on Saturday when l'akau ran third in tho ■ hurdles nt Jloorefiold and Sunburnt second in the Flying Handicap. H. Coker, who used to ride for the Porirua stable, received a severe shaking at Riccarton last Thursday when schooling Kafflo. The horse fell and Coker sustained injuries which necessitated his Teceiviug medical attention. ' Tho Victorian Eacinp; Club's Grand National meeting opens at Fleinington next Saturday when the principal eveut to bo decided' is tho Grand National Hurdle Bace. By to-day's cable tho result of the Grand Prix do Paris should be known. To-morrow the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club meet and will deal with tho petition of owners, who desire that the Grand National weights shoul,d not be declared until after the Trentham meeting.
