MASTERTON NOTES.

A social gathering was held last evening in connection with tho Masterton branch of the Carpenters' and Joiners Union. There was a large attendance. Mr. W. Lawton presided. Another of the popular "Inslesides in connection with the Wairarepa Caledonian Society is to be held on July 25. Thcfo gatherings have become t|iiito a feature, among tho winter functions in Masterton. Mr. H. AY. Pownall, wbo is leaving Masterton for Wellington, was entertained last evening by a number of friends, and presented with a set of silver-mount-ed hiiir brushes.

At a meeting of the Masterton Competitions Society last evening final arrangements were made for tho cempetitions which aro to be held next month. A feature this year will be an art exhibi. tion, for which a number of valuable pictures are being obtained. The estimated loss by fire in Master: ■ton last year was JilG-14 for buildings, and X3SI!) for their contents. Property destroyed wos covered by insurances to an amount of JC2153 10s.

At a meeting of tho managers of tho Mmsterton Technical School, held last evening, it was decided to place on record the .'ervices rendered to the school by' Mr. C. N. Haslam, who leaves to take up duty at Island Bay shortly. There are ninety-eight pupils receiving instruction in com»;?rcial work at the Ma.sterfon Technical School.

During the month of June only on? bankruptcy has been recorded in tho Wairarapa. compared with two for tho corresponding month last year. For the six months ending June HO, six bankruptcies have been recorded, n< against twelve for the corresponding six months of last year.

Fifteen births, five mnrriaees, . and three deaths have been registered in Mastorton during the month of June.
