PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.
Tho third meeting of tho session of tho Wellington Philosophical Society, held in tho Dominion Museum last ovening, attracted a large attendance. Professor T. H. Laby, 8.A., and Mr. M. Alexander, M.Sc. (Physics Research Scholar, Victoria College), presented an interesting paper on the subject of "The Thermal Conductivity of Gases and Solid Insulators." The paper was a description of a new method for the determination of the heat conductivity of poor conductors. It is proposed to determine the conductivity of - some of the insulators used in the freezing industry so as to ascertain which are the most effective. Tho method is being worked cut for the case of gases as it is the most: difficult case. The insulator is placed between two parallel copper discs, maintained at a constant dili'erotieo of temperature by electrical heating. The heat crossing the insulator is measured electrically and tho ifemperatures by a platinum resistance thermometer. ■ Afttjr tho paper had been read, Mr. J., MacDonaUl screened a number of films depicting many of the most beautiful rapids, mountains, and glaciers of New Zealand. Charming views of seascapes and waterfalls were also shown.
